Alexis Cohen (a.k.a. "Glitter Girl") twice appeared on American Idol. In season 7, Alexis first appeared. Outside the audition room, Alexis ranted for a while, spewing a string of profanities combined with multiple confused cliches and mixed metaphors. In season 8, Alexis reappeared with a new attitude, promising that she would behave. After her audition, she ended up giving the judges the double-finger before leaving.

Alexis was a great Idle Idol. Even while ranting and raving, she seemed to be upbeat about the whole thing. She was working on stand-up comedy and had even posted a MySpace video just the day before her death. If you are not allergic to adult language, you can watch the Alexis Cohen MySpace video.

Katrina sang Faith Hill's Breathe. Kara and Paula complained that her voice thinned out as she progressed through the song. Simon and Randy (once again) argued that her voice had improved on the audition round.

Before we find out the result, Ryan asks: "But with just her voice stripped down, does she have enough to get through?"

As it turns out, Katrina did have enough, because she and the rest of her group was passed through to the next round.

Nonetheless, we see his Norman Gentle character take the stage in that same costume, red sweatbands and all. As he took the stage, he introduced himself with, "All right, time for some honesty. I'm here to have some fun. I'm Norman Gentle. I am 27 years old. I'm from Stratton, Vermont and I am gonna rock it." Norman then pulled out a pitch pipe and played it off-key.

Norman then broke into Jennifer Hudson's And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going, except he changed the lyrics to sing about himself and he gave a shout-out to the balcony and to Seacrest to sing along:

I'm the best man you'll ever know
there's no way I could ever, ever go
Darling there's no way
no no no no no no no
no way I'm living without you
BALCONY!
I don't want want to be free
SEACREST!
I'm staying. I am
I am staying
And you and you and you and please you
Please won't you love me

Randy started with, "So listen, this is the funny thing about you, man. You are hilarious, dude. You are like banoodles kind of a guy but you know what? You actually can sing. You've got some skills in there, dawg!"

Simon, of course, chimed in by saying that "without the glasses and the silly haircut, [he's] just a boring person" and that when he puts on the costume he's a "joke".

Paula said it would be interesting to hear Nick sing a song "all stripped down". With a guy like Nick, you know you can't get away with a comment like that without a stripping joke. So as Nick started unbuttoning his shirt, Paula quickly said, "No, I don't mean you strip. That's OK. Nick, Norman, Nick, Norman." She also noted that she would like to hear him sing without all the silliness.

We're not sure what Kara had to say about Nick, but it seems that at least Randy and Paula agreed to pass Nick onto the next round because he was accepted!

Offstage, Nick told Ryan that he was going to retire the costume on American Idol, so we'll see what happens.

This year, this site highlighted 38 Idle Idols in Season 8. Seven of these 38 contestants received a golden ticket and are headed to Hollywood!

• Michael Castro — Jason Castro's little brother started singing 20 days before his audition and was passed through to Hollywood.
• Tatiana Del Toro — The drama queen passed her press kit out and showed off her attitude.
• Joshua Ulloa — This catchy-but-gimmicky "Inspector Gadget" entertained the judges.
• Melinda Camille — This singer who enjoys dancing naked would get naked if all the judges did, too.
• Nick "Norman Gentle" Mitchell — One of the most entertaining auditions this year, Norman cracked wise and had the whole panel laughing with his routine, which included a joke about Simon and Seacrest getting it on.

Alexis returned to audition a second time. You may remember Alexis Cohen from Season 7, when she flipped us the double-bird and gave one of the best, angriest, and most convoluted post-audition speeches of American Idol history.

Alexis said she came to the New York audition with a whole new attitude: She has replaced the middle fingers with the two-thumbs-up symbol. We also see her meditating and chanting.

Alexis calmly walked into the audition room and informed the judges that she had a new attitude. She sang Madonna's Like a Prayer, but it didn't go well. The judges agreed that she actually sounded worse than her audition last season.

Simon noted that they had fully established that she cannot sing and Alexis politely said, "OK, thank you." Then she said, "I don't know what else to do except give you the finger," and promptly flipped Simon the double-bird yet again. Upon leaving, Alexis said, "Thank you. You're an [BLEEP]."

Nick Mitchell, a.k.a. Norman Gentle, was dressed in a pretty crazy fashion: A bright red headband and matching wristbands, big glasses, a gaudy shirt, and khaki shorts. He ran into the audition room, jumped onto the stage, struck a pose, and shouted, "American Idol!"

Simon said that he didn't want Norman to be funny, but he just wanted Norman to be serious. Norman said, "OK then, it's done" and quickly transformed into Nick by removing the headband, wristbands, and glasses.

Nick sang Jennifer Hudson's And I Am Telling You in a serious manner, but certainly not up to Idol standards. Simon cracked a joke, thereby forcing Nick to revert back into Norman, and consequently kicking off the following banter:

Simon: Norman, you told me you weren't going to make this funny.
Norman: Oh! You hurt me where you get kicked sometimes. That was very hard!
Simon: I'd have thought you'd quite like that.
Norman: You mean the way you like it when Seacrest does it?
[All the judges yell "Whoa!"]
Norman: Whatcha say now, Simon?!?
Simon: That was funny! That was actually funny.

Simon said that Norman was becoming more likable, but that they weren't looking for "a ghastly cabaret comedy singer". Norman got a chair and did his best to belt out Amazing Grace. While he sang, Simon kept warning him not to pull faces, but Norman eventually slipped one in and Simon started yapping about his faces. Norman yelled in a shrill voice, "It's addictive!" and the judges started cracking up.

Paula said she loved him and Kara said it was the first time she had been entertained all day. Norman promised he wouldn't beg and then immediately screamed "[BLEEP] PLEASE!", and fell on the floor, prostrate. Paula gave Norman a "Yes" and Simon immediately retorted with "a categorical 'No'". Kara convinced Randy to give Norman a "Yes", so we'll be seeing him again in Hollywood!

Joel says that he is known as "Rockero Loco", or "Crazy Rocker".

We see Joel singing a screamo song at an ice cream vendor with a song whose lyrics consist of "YOU ARE SELLING ICE CREAM!" over and over again. We also see Joel dressed up as a rat, going around and giving people rat hugs.

For his audition, Joel came in with a person-sized cardboard cutout of an iPod, which he referred to as "a human iPod" or "guyPod". Before singing, Joel reached through the iPod viewing window, adjusted the dial, and pressed play before singing Mr. Big's To Be With You. One line in, Simon asked for a new song. Rather than changing the iPod dial, Joel threw the guyPod down and started singing Marc Anthony's Don't Let Me Leave.

Simon stopped Joel and said, "I can't listen to this any more. I can't listen to this. I really, really can't. It's just awful. It's everything I hate. I hate everything. I mean, the whole act is excruciatingly bad. Honestly, it's just terrible." At this point, Joel pulled out his little friend, a lion hand puppet. Simon questioned the relevance of a lion on his hand for a singing competition, and Joel appropriately broke into his rendition of Elton John's Circle of Life (from The Lion King, of course).

The judges gave him the official four "No" votes. Joel responded by happily screaming, "Whoooo! I got a no! I got a no!" He then ran out of the audition room in a blue costume and jumped into the swimming pool.

Mike dressed up with a sort of 80s metal look, including the big hair wig, armbands, fingerless gloves, sleeveless RATT shirt, and face paint. Mike didn't sing, but rather played his guitar music on his boom box as he rocked out.

Simon responded flatly, "All right, this is a complete and utter waste of time, this audition."

Melinda feels like she has a message for the world: "Humanity is kind of taking a shift right now and I just want to be a part of it."

Melinda says she experiences happiness while she dances naked in her room. Simon suggested that this might be her method for sharing happiness with the world.

Kara asked Melinda if she wanted to be naked right then, and Melinda replied, "If you all were."

Simon suggested, "Why don't you imagine that Randy is naked?" and Melinda agreed.

Melinda sang Michael Buble's Feeling Good well enough to get passed through to Hollywood unanimously.

Adeola is a 19-year-old who says she is compared to Mariah Carey or Mary J. Blige.

Adeola quit her job as a bank teller because she was so confident in her singing abilities. (Regardless of one's singing abilities, it may be worth noting how much time elapses between the auditions and the Hollywood show, and how much time beyond that there is before anyone actually sees any money.)

Adeola sang Jennifer Hudson's And I Am Telling You in a warbly, unconfident voice. Simon suggested that she retract the resignation letter because the audition was "shockingly bad." Adeola tried singing again, and Simon even said he would call her boss to get her job back.

Ryan got Ade's boss David on the phone and asked if he would talk with Simon. The boss agreed, and Simon sat down with Adeola and talked with David. They both agreed that Adeola was a great person, and David agreed to give Adeola her job back.

Chris brought with him a shirt with Simon Cowell's face on it, but that was completely overshadowed by the fact that he also brough a six foot tall pink bunny with him, too. Chris brought his friend Greg the Rabbit (a.k.a. "Grabbit") — not to be confused with "Greg the Bunny". Greg came along to support Chris' attempt to get on American Idol.

Chris entered the audition room also holding another picture of Simon on a stick, which he referred to as "Handsome Simon". At that moment, Greg the Rabbit entered and got the judges' attention. Simon told Greg to go stand behind Chris during the audition. As Chris started singing Del Amitri's Roll To Me, Greg got into the music and started bobbing his head, sending his large bunny ears back and forth over his head. It was so distracting that Simon had to stop Chris and have him start again without Greg bouncing behind him.

Chris only got a few notes into Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's Ain't No Mountain High Enough before Simon said it wasn't going to work.

Greg actually got an informal "Yes" from Randy, and Chris was rejected wholesale. Neither made it through to Hollywood.

Greg gave Simon a big bear (bunny?) hug before leaving.

Rich sang Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's Ain't No Mountain High Enough. He didn't sing well, and his style was . . . just plain weird. He had long, wavy hair with red streaks, sunglasses with bright red lenses up on his head, eye makeup, a hemp necklace with large beads, and a completely mismatched undershirt-shirt-jacket set.

Simon summed it up well when he said, "You're never ever in a million billion years gonna win a show like this."

Rich asked to sing another song and awkwardly licked his lips. Randy just replied by saying "Next!"

Tara was described as "Salt Lake City's only goth." Tara insisted that she just liked to dress that way and that she wasn't trying to make a point or be goth.

Ryan mentioned that Tara had ESP, and she explained, "I know when certain people are going to die, whether they're family or on TV." The judges asked her to read their minds, but she explained that she didn't "have it that strong."

Tara belted out and off-key version of the Moulin Rouge song One Day I'll Fly Away while Randy hit his hand against his forehead. When she got to the "one day I'll fly away" lyric, Simon muttered "Yeah, hopefully soon".

Simon said that she sounded like a baby and that it just didn't work, so Tara excused herself and walked out — and kept walking, right past Ryan.

George is studying physics. Ryan told him that many people fear physics and math, but George clarified that "it's all just very basic stuff. You've gotta look at it at the core, not from the outside."

Simon started out by asking him where he saw himself in 11 years' time, in his wildest dreams. George baffled Simon by replying that he'd "probably have a simple house with nice floors — I want marble."

George sang Katrina and the Waves' Walking on Sunshine with a very small, quiet, shaky voice. Simon asked if he had sang in public before and George said that he sang with his friends. Simon asked him what his friends did, and George started explaining that they liked to rock climb, play guitar, sing.

After George left, the judges just exchanged confused looks. Outside, George calmly said to Ryan, "Oh, look, no ticket."

Naomi started out by telling Randy that her friend Samantha was a huge Randy fan. In faux-slow-motion, Randy and Samantha "ran" across the room to each other and embraced.

Simon suggested that Samantha sit on Randy's lap for the audition, so she did. Paula then went over and sat on Simon's lap, so the judges called Ryan in to come sit on Kara's lap. When Ryan sat on Kara's lap, she bounced him up and down and said "good boy" as if her were a baby.

After all this craziness, Naomi finally started singing Minnie Riperton's Loving You. Two notes in, it was obvious that Naomi had no true singing talent, and Paula banged her head down onto the table.

Everyone had a good laugh after the song, and Naomi said that everyone told her she was great. Simon clarified that the audition wasn't a joke, and Naomi started to cry. Randy, Paula, and Kara got up and gave Naomi a good group hug. Post-audition, Naomi was confused because she hit her high note really well.

Ryan kept commenting on how confident Kaneswa was for a 16-year-old. According to her mother, Kaneswa has been singing in Jacksonville ever since she was 5, and this contributes to her confidence.

In the audition room, Kaneswa confidently butchered Anita Baker's Caught up in the Rapture of Love. Simon said that the song was got progressively worse as she sang it, but Kaneswa disagreed. She said that her mother said she was a great singer, so they brought her mom in. Her mother Paula said she has sang all around Jacksonville, and Simon asked if she was moving the whole time.

On their way out, Kaneswa's mother still firmly let Simon know that he was wrong in his assessment of her daughter's singing. Needless to say, Simon's rejection didn't dampen Kaneswa or her mother's confidence.

Joshua sang Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On. He started out by singing the guitar, then by singing the song well, with a tiny bit of sound effects sprinkled throughout.

Simon admitted that Joshua sang well, but that he seemed like Inspector Gadget with all the little corny extras he through into his act. Randy said that "at least, it was entertaining."

After getting passed through to Hollywood unanimously, Joshua jumped up in the air, screamed a weird screamed, and ran out — walking into a tree as he looked back to thank the judges.

Rebecca appeared for a brief interview on the local Fox affiliate's news piece surrounding American Idol. Paula even recognized her from the news as she entered the room.

Rebecca sang Carrie Underwood's Before He Cheats. Speaking of cheating, she had a cheat sheet around her left arm because she was afraid of forgetting the lyrics. Rebecca started off singing confidently but with almost no singing ability. A few lines in, Rebecca paused and had to look at her arm for the rest of the lyrics.

Kara cut Rebecca off and the discussion went like this:

Kara: "Wait a minute. She was voted Most Humorous in high school."
[uncomfortable silence from Rebecca and the other judges]
Kara [smiling nervously]: "That, that wasn't . . . ?"
Simon: "Are you saying this was a joke?"
Kara: "I, yeah, wasn't it?"
Simon: "Was it?"
Rebecca [quietly]: "No."
Kara: "Oh, boy. It did say 'Voted . . . most . . . '" [trails off]

Long story short, Rebecca left the audition room in tears and Kara asked Paula to hit her for being mean.

Aaron immediately separated himself from the rest of the crowd with his high-energy "Whoo!" that echoed through the building. A seemingly endless ball of energy, Aaron was bouncing around and continually screaming, "Whoo!"

Aaron declared that he was going to sing Creedence Clearwater Revival's Have You Ever Seen the Rain? but three of the judges jumped at least an inch and Paula literally spun around in her seat as Aaron screamed the lyrics at the top of his lungs. Randy described it as "the primal scream audition" and Simon said that it was like the fire alarm going off. The raucous singing was so loud, Ryan heard it from outside and headed in to see what was going on.

After being served his rejection from all four judges, Aaron turned into a much more somber, calm mood and there were no more "Whoo"s heard that day.

Ross Bradley Plavsic considers himself an academic. One of his geekier endeavors is organizing Chinese characters based on visual similarity so that they are easier to learn. I suppose this might be similar to rearranging the alphabet so the letters "b" and "d" are next to each other and so that "p", "q", and "g" are next to each other, but I fail to see how that helps.

Ross chose to sing Jay and the Americans' Cara Mia in a range too low for himself.

Ross blamed his poor performance on the dry air and having a scratchy throat, so Paula asked him if he'd like some water. Ross accepted the offer. To Paula's dismay, Ross grabbed her water cup and started sipping through her straw.

Ross started singing Love Me Tender, but Simon quickly pointed out that the water hadn't helped. As soon as Ross left the room, Paula demanded a new drink and a new cup.

Post-audition, Ross sang one parting song, with slightly altered lyrics: James Ingram's Just Once:

I did my best
But i guess my best wasn't good enough
'Cause here I am
back where I started

So apparently being on the dean's list three times just isn't enough to get you through on American Idol.

Just to be sure Patrick got his name out there, his t-shirt had a huge "PATRICK" on it. Not too subtle, but effective.

Patrick started out with a couple of Michael Jackson's patented moves before breaking into a flat rendition of Billie Jean. The basic problem comes with the fact that Patrick is the size about about five Michael Jacksons.

To truly appreciate Patrick's moves, you really have to experience his Jackson-esque dance moves. Here is one of his special moves:

Patrick had more moves, including a full spin or two.

Ryan is the contestant I pointed out pre-season in my list of worst American Idol pictures and described his look as if "a 1980s couch sprouted a Kiss head and is trying to sing now."

Keeping true to his outfit, Ryan sang Tori Amos' Mr. Zebra:

Hello, Mr. Zebra
Can I have your sweater
'cause it's cold, cold, cold.

I don't know about Mr. Zebra's sweater, but I guarantee you that Ryan did not get a golden ticket.

Mark is a descendant of Samuel Mudd, the doctor who treated John Wilkes Booth's leg after he jumped from the balcony after shooting Lincoln. To this day, the descendants of Samuel Mudd are trying to defend his name because he was seen as a traitor for helping the man who assassinated the President Lincoln. Luckily, this audition would not be in Ford's Theatre, but in Louisville's Churchill Downs.

Mark sang George Jones' country song White Lightning, complete with sound effects for the lightning.

Paula told Mark that American Idol wasn't the right competition for him. Simon suggested that the right competition for him might be Wheel of Fortune.

As Mark left the stage, he told the judges, "Take care, and be careful." When asked what he said, he clarified, "Be careful in whatever you do." Paula explained like a kindergarten teacher that you don't tell people that.

Tiffany is a high school graduate and told the judges that her goal was to get on American Idol. If she didn't make it she was going to go to college.

Tiffany sang Mariah Carey's Hero in a weak, warbly, and off-key voice. Simon told her, "The good news is, you are going to college."

Post-audition, Tiffany sang the song she really wanted to sing: Kelly Clarkson's Because Of You. Though her mother swayed in the background, this song did not have any better results, with sound effects of dogs barking and horses neighing in the background.

Akilah printed out instructions on how to train a gospel singer from the internet. These printouts had many biological diagrams and instruction on manipulating various parts of the body such as the trachea, larynx, and diaphragm. As Akilah read these sentences to the camera, she read off various items such as:

• glotissal irritation
• muscles of the quartilages
• helium of the left lobe
• trashea
• larnux
• lozenge
• lyginical quartilegs

Akilah sang her original song Make Sweet Love. Simon said that the song was not very good, so she sang Aretha Franklin's (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. Akilah completely missed a note and Simon stopped her. Akilah asked for one more chance because she came "from the wrong rectum." The judges got riled up at this point, and Randy asked about how you could have more than one rectum.

Akilah continued to beg for another chance, so Paula hugged her and walked off. Kara finally got up, hugged Akilah, told her it was time to go, and escorted her toward the door. Kara then got upset that Simon let her go on and on while he usually cuts contestants off too quickly.

Even in Akilah's post-audition interview, she rambled on and on, even so far as to continue rambling after she walked off-screen.
