Ian is a self-proclaimed "superstar," dancer, and singer who previously auditioned on So You Think You Can Dance, and American Idol was his next target.
Rather than a superstar, Ian came off more as an obnoxious New Yorker with huge lips than anything else.
After rattling off Laura Branigan's Gloria, the judges stopped him. Simon called his performance "rubbish," and Ian demanded to see Simon's working visa. At this point, Simon was already bored with Ian's shtick, and security corralled him out the door.
Post audition, Ian ranted for quite some time, including his observation that "Hollywood is New Jersey with celebrities."

Since Robert claims to sound just like Elvis, it seemed natural that he chose Burning Love as his song.
Did Robert make it to Hollywood? Let's just say that if Elvis really is dead, he's be turning in his grave.
In his post-audition time with Ryan, he didn't say anything. He simply tore off his contestant number and crumpled it up.

Sean came to American Idol dressed as Fidel Castro, complete with a (natural) long beard. He clearly didn't see the sign that said "Long haired freaky people need not apply."
Sean confessed, "Everybody says i look like either Osama bin Laden or Jesus or Castro or just "Homeless Bum," but I really think all of us are kind of homeless. When it comes down to it, all of us are really poor inside."
Pre-audition, you'd never have thought he could sing, but not only did he belt out Johnny Cash's God's Gonna Cut You Down, he even made it through to Hollywood. We'll have to see how far Sean gets in the next round as he battles this non-pop image issue.

Janita's wardrobe choice was thought out, but it wasn't well thought out. Janita wore a halter top dress that showed every bit of her cleavage. "The judges' first impression of me will probably be — well, they'll probably say I'm innocent, well put together, really neat, conservative, and very sexy. Very sexy."
While Janita sang The Trammps' Disco Inferno, she bobbed back and forth, waving her cleavage at the judges. With each bob and weave, she came closer and closer to pulling a Janet Jackson. Paula started to get nervous about an incident, and Simon warned her, "Careful."
As things became less and less stable, Paula pulled her blouse closed as a strong hint to Janita, and Simon said, "Well, Janita, you are a handful."
Needless to say, Janita did not make it through to the next round.

Topher's wife left him, and that freed him up to audition for American Idol and attempt to win Paula's heart.
Topher sang Footloose, despite his inherent inability to sing or dance. His audition included some dancing, including a silent pause during the instrumental section of the song.
The judges described Topher's audition as "bad karaoke" and Topher took the rejection fairly well.
And how did Topher feel about meeting Paula? He left her a message on the way out: "Paula, you were great — looking, but that's it. I'm sorry."

In Alexis' introduction, Ryan said that the judges were bracing themselves for a bad day.
Alexis pulled her sweater down as she sang Teena Marie's Square Biz, and her bangles around her wrist were as loud as she was, clanging away as she gestured to the song.
Alexis sang very high and her singing was too weird for the judges.

Tamika is not the most well-spoken 16-year-old to have auditioned on American Idol. Her pre-audition interview was full of awkward pauses and lack of enunciation.
During her interview before the judges, Simon had a difficult time understanding Timika:
Timika: I think I could be a Mya.
Simon: Pardon?
Timika: I think I could be a Mya.
Simon: A model.
Timika: A mya.
Simon: A Maya. A mayor?
Timika: A mya, sir.
Simon: A mayor.
Timika, Randy, & Paula: A Mya.
Simon: A mayor.
Randy: Mya's a singer . . .
Simon: Oh! I thought you wanted to be a mayor.
Timika sang Ashanti's Rock Wit U in a grossly nasal and tone-deaf style. Simon admitted, "I've got to be honest with you. I couldn't understand a single word of that."
Despite her initial rejection, Timika started to sing Secret Lover in a breathy voice. All the judges gave her a "No" and Timika was on her way.

Carlene wore one of the oddest outfits to her audition. She wore red body fishnet on her arms and legs along with a grey skirt and vest. Carlene explained, "My outfit today expresses that I am very excited, a little nervous. I think my outfit just means who I am and what I'm about — craziness, goofiness, and loud — I'm very loud."
Because of the red fishnet covering her body, Simon told Carlene that she looked sunburned.
Randy sang "I like big –" and Carlene immediately sang the next few lines with gusto. She admitted, "I've got a big booty, I'm fluffy," which prompted Paula to give her approval of the term.
Originally, Carlene intended Hit Me With Your Best Shot until she found out that Simon hates the song. It seems that any song choice would not have helped Carlene advance to the next round, however. The judges quickly and matter-of-factly declined. Carlene brought Tika, her pet miniature Pomeranian, to American Idol but did not bring the pet into the audition. Unfortunately, the dog did not give her much luck in the audition. Maybe she should have brought it in to sing instead.
Again referring to the fishnet, Simon asked, "What was that net she was wearing? . . . It looked like she'd been caught in a net."

Steven is called Red because he truly is a redhead. From his red hair to his red facial hair, he has earned his name.
Red sang Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody in the highest pitch he could muster — so high, in fact, that many of the notes never made it out of his mouth.
After singing, he told the judges that he felt that a bit of coaching would help him win the audition. He challenged Simon to coach him and prove that he was a great vocal coach, but Simon told him, "It would be like coaching a one-legged man to win the 100 meter sprint."
Red's parting message to the judges was, "Hey, the way I see it, don't — don't be about it — er, don't, hey — don't sing about it, be about. All right? Don't sing it, just bring it. Aight?"

Eric is a hairdresser that looks like Taylor Hicks.
Eric said that he wanted to distinguish himself apart from Taylor, but he also contemplated doing some Taylor moves during his audition, noting that "If I portray him, it's just me."
Eric's singing talent wasn't of the same calibre as Taylor's, though. He was quickly rejected by the judges.

Kenneth believed that he was the next American Idol, but he certainly didn't look the part. He sort of looked like an even weirder looking Steve Buscemi.
After singing 'N Sync's Tearin' Up My Heart, the judges gave him the bad news. After some discussion, Simon told Kenneth, "You look like one of those creatures that live in the jungle with those massive eyes. What are they called? Bush babies."
During the wait to audition, Kenneth formed a friendship with Jonathan Jayne, a kindly guy with a rotund figure. They supported each other through the process, but neither made it to Hollywood.
