Samantha and her sister Michelle both have a Simon obsession, which deeply disturbed Ryan.
As Samantha entered the audition room, Michelle threw a paper airplane into the room and onto the stage. Randy asked what it was, and Samantha explained that it was a note for Simon.
Simon read the note aloud: "Dear Simon, please let me in. Please, please, please. You're on my list of who I want to meet, along with who I want to meet along with Oprah and Obama."
Upon reading the note, Simon invited Michelle to join the panel, and she quickly accepted and shared Simon's chair with him.
Samantha sang Aretha Franklin's Until You Come Back to Me in front of this modified four judge panel. She got a unanimous vote to pass her through to Hollywood. In celebration, Samantha and her sister gave Simon a group hug.

As soon as Monique stepped onto the stage, Simon noted that it looked like three separate people dressed her that day: "It's like, 'I'll do the lingerie,' 'I'll do the top,' and 'I'll do the boots,'" prompting Randy to exclaim, "Lingerie?!?" Monique admitted to having put the outfit together herself.
Whitney Houston's "I Believe in Miracles" (which is actually titled I Believe In You & Me). Simon assured her that not one word of the chorus would happen.
Monique said, "OK," but then broke into Mariah Carey's Fantasy.
Simon replied with, "I'm not getting through to you, am I?"
Monique muttered that there had to be something, so then she broke into yet another song, but Simon persisted.
This time, instead of breaking into another song, Monique broke into tears, insisting that she had just chosen the wrong song. She promised she'd be back to try again.
Given her audition, it looks like she picked the wrong three songs.

Joseph sang Justin Guarini's Get Here in a serious tone, so if you weren't looking at your television screen, you'd think it was just another mediocre American Idol audition. What you wouldn't know, however, is that Joseph was dressed in a sombrero and poncho, with Juanita performing as a mime alongside him. Juanita mimed an airplane while he sang that line, and even did some freaky "my brains are falling out of my head" motion during "you can reach me with your mind."
During the performance, Simon rubbed his eyes. Randy shook his head and Simon said, "Sorry." Joseph and Juanita made their way out with smiles on their faces.
Joseph and Juanita were also pictured in episode 5 (Omaha) as one of the squares in the "You Forgot the Lyrics" title screen, though they weren't shown as having forgotten their lyrics at all.

Paul Marturano sang a love song dedicated to Paula that was all about stalking her. Paul's hilarious song "Stalker" included several humorous lines, and Paula was simultaneously amused and creeped out. Eventually, Simon lost patience, and security showed Paul the exit doors.
Paul took the time to sit with us for an interview and discussed various aspects of his interview process. Paul discussed his other musical endeavors and also what happened to him after security escorted him out of the audition room.
Novac from Idle Idols: For the record: What is your name? What is your quest? What is your favourite colour?
Paul Marturano: AH My name is Sir Paula Abdul's Stalker Marturano My quest is to perform my music and comedy for the world while saving homeless animals from shleters before they can be euthanized and my favorite color is Green …..no wait Blue
Novac: Are you a fan of American Idol? How did you decide to audition?
Paul: I am a fan of the show. I have always wanted to be on the show but have never auditioned because by the time I got up the nerve I was past the age limit. So I decided that I would just go have some fun and see what happened.
Novac: Did they give you a hard time because you were overage, or did they pass you through because they knew you'd make for such a fun audition?

Milo Turk was the American Idol contestant who proudly and emphatically sang his song No Sex Allowed for the judges. Milo completely stunned Ryan with his views and further confused Randy during his audition. Despite being overage, Randy and Paula did end up having fun and singing along with the catchy chorus.
I had the opportunity to chat with Milo for a while about his audition. Milo even shares the two additional verses you didn't hear on the show!
Novac from Idle Idols: For the record: What is your name? What is your quest? What is your favourite colour?
Milo Turk: My name is Milo Turk. My quest is to get everyone not to take sex for granted, and to consider it sacred. My favorite color is green, like the environment.
Novac: You sang No Sex Allowed for the judges. Is there a way for us to hear the second and third verses of the song that you mentioned during your audition?
Milo: I could type the lyrics to the second and third verses, if you like.
Novac: Sure. I think the readers would like to read them.

The Writers' Guild of America strike is slowly starting to take its toll on the entertainment industry as each company begins running out of fresh scripts. Networks are looking for ways to retain a sturdy audience without additional scripts coming in from their shows' writers, whether it be by reruns, the regular assortment of mid-season replacements, reality shows, resurrected shows, and even cable network shows. The presence of reality shows strengthens more and more as the strike continues because reality shows are produced relatively cheaply and, most importantly, without scripts.
One might think that American Idol would benefit from the strike because a show like AI is theoretically expandable into many more episodes. (more…)

Renaldo had an undeniably unique outfit for his American Idol audition: A white hat covered with white feathers, a sign on the front saying "SIMON", and with wings on the bac; a quilted vest; large, white feather pompoms on the back shoulders; and a shiny silver cape.
As Renaldo walked into the audition room, Paula asked him why Simon's name was on his hat. He answered, "Two reasons: Everyone, everywhere, as long as there is free media, television, radio, speaks the name of Simon. Even a newborn baby. Secondly–" and then Randy and Paula cut him off. The first reason was already too much for them to take.
Renaldo sang his own composition, We're Brothers Forever, which is a ballad consisting of the following lyrics, sung boldly and proudly:
I am your brother,
your best friend forever.
Singing the songs;
The music that you like.
Brothers 'til the end of time.
Together or not,
you're always in my heart.
Your hurt, your feelings
and you will worry no more.
Renaldo finished singing the song and Randy urged him to continue. Apparently that is the full song, because Renaldo sang that chorus again. In fact, he continued singing it over and over again, and Randy and Paula were trying to convince Simon that the song was really a ballad to him.
After a few rounds, Paula screamed and got up, and Randy joined Renaldo on stage to rock to the left and to the right as they sang the song. Randy then brought Ryan in to sing along, and Paula joined them on stage as well as they serenaded Simon.
